SMEs in the Indian handicrafts sector can now promote their product basket effectively across the world thanks to the various initiatives undertaken by the government to promote the sector. Highlighting the various measures initiated by the government in the recent past to promote the handicrafts sector, Panabaaka Lakshmi, minister of state for textiles, stated, “From organising buyer-seller meets abroad to launching websites and magazines for creating awareness and undertaking a series of publicity measures, the government has done a lot to endorse the brand image of Indian handicrafts.”
In a written reply to Lok Sabha, Ms Lakshmi also talked about the government efforts taken to protect Indian crafts under the Intellectual Property Right (IPR) Act.
“The promotional activities undertaken by the government in the recent past has certainly helped small-scale units in the handicrafts sector to expand their footprint globally and step-up their exports,” said P Sharma, proprietor of Jaipur Crafts, a small-sized handicrafts store in Jaipur.
On back of the enhanced promotion of Indian crafts’ brand image by the government, the Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH) expects handicrafts exports from the country to grow two-fold to US$3.4 billion by 2011-12 from the estimated US$1.8 billion in 2009-10.
